The former ITV host, who sensationally quit the show last month, took to Twitter on Friday morning to celebrate Derek’s return to his family home after he spent over a year in intensive care while battling the lasting effects of Covid.
Sharing a Daily Mail article about Derek’s milestone moment, Piers tweeted: “What fabulous news”, in support of his pal Kate.
Derek, 53, has now been taken off all machines and will receive round-the-clock care at the family’s residence in North London.
GMB’s Kate, who shares children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, with Derek, has been warned by doctors that her husband still faces a ‘long and gruelling’ fight ahead to full health.
Despite his current condition, Kate and her kids are thrilled that Derek is finally allowed to continue his recovery at home after spending an entire year in hospital.
Opening up about Derek’s return, Kate’s friend told The Sun : “Kate’s dreamt of this day for so long, and can’t thank wonderful NHS staff enough.”
They added: “The children, who have been so remarkably resilient, have been so, so happy to have their dad home. There have been a lot of happy tears from everyone.”
Last weekend, Kate spoke about how difficult it was to go through her second Easter without Derek.
“Happy Easter everyone,” she started off the heartfelt post.
“It’s so hard that it’s the second we’ve lived through in Lockdown/restrictions and of course, our second without Derek home with us.
“But he is still here so we have so much to give thanks for and there are lots to hope for isn’t there.”
Despite living through her ‘worst nightmare’, Kate has been a pillar of strength for other people who have loved ones in the same position as Derek.
The TV star recently made ITV documentary Finding Derek, which focused on her husband’s battle with coronavirus, and the eye-opening documentary struck a chord with audiences across the nation.
Kate is set to release a book on April 29 called The Power Of Hope.
The memoir is her personal diary from the toughest period of her life, and she hopes her honest words will be helpful to other families who are facing the struggles she has in the last year.
