When will Boris act?

The UK today recorded the highest number of daily deaths from Covid since the start of the pandemic.

We should never let ourselves become immune to this unfolding tragedy.

Every one of those deaths leaves a family in mourning. It means a partner without their loved one, a friend lost for ever, or a grandchild without a grandparent.

What makes the number of fatalities so heart-wrenching is that this was not inevitable. We are in this situation because the Government failed to act as alarm bells rang.

It was clear before Christmas that the new variant posed a deadly risk and the measures in place were not enough to contain its spread.

Yet Boris Johnson still allowed families to gather and non-essential shops to stay open.

Even now lessons have not been learned.

Despite the risk of new variants from South Africa and Brazil, the controls at our ports and airports remain scandalously lax.

How many more deaths will it require to jolt the Prime Minister out of his complacency?

An own goal

It should not have taken the intervention of Marcus Rashford for the Government to act on school food parcels.

A caring government would not have allowed this to happen in the first place.

Boris Johnson and his hapless sidekick Gavin Williamson today condemned the firm which provided the substandard meals.

But ministers drew up guidance for what should be in the food parcels and it was ministers who forced schools to turn to profiteering private companies.

The compassion of teachers doing everything to support pupils is in shameful contrast to a government blind to the results of poverty.

Time to fill

Mr Bond, we are still expecting you.

The release of the new Bond film, No Time to Die, looks set to be delayed again.

Let’s hope it sees the Living Daylights before the end of the year.
