Liverpool’s most immediate challenge is to win their final three games of the season and beat Manchester City ’s Premier League points tally.
However, the recent draw with Burnley has given the Reds food for thought not just when it comes to that challenge, but also in terms of their preparations for the 2020/21 season: they may now decide they need to strengthen ahead of what won’t be an easy title defence next season.
We’ve got updates from around Europe regarding which players might be moving to Anfield this summer… and one man who seemingly won’t be making such a switch.
Reds target Osimhen set for Italy
Lille and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen was mentioned in connection with Liverpool earlier in the summer, but he now seems poised to complete a switch to Napoli.
According to journalist Nicolo Schira, the forward has met with the club’s sporting director and the deal will soon be made official.
Football Italia had earlier reported AC Milan were attempting to clinch a deal for Osimhen, who is valued at more than €50m.
The former Wolfsburg frontman scored 18 goals for Lille in the 2019/20 season, helping the club finish fourth, and also netted against Chelsea in the Champions League. The 21-year-old also scored his first international goals for Nigeria in 2019.
Origi keen on Anfield stay
There had been whispers of a move away from Liverpool for Divock Origi, with the Champions League final goalscorer struggling for minutes during this season’s title campaign.
The Belgian has started just six league games this season, scoring three times, and made just one start in the Reds’ unsuccessful Champions League defence, against Genk in the group stages.
Some had wondered whether the lack of game-time might encourage the 25-year-old to move on.
However, according to Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws, via Sport Witness, Origi “doesn’t feel like an adventure” elsewhere and is in no hurry to move on.
Origi joined Liverpool after playing for his country at the 2014 World Cup, but has never been a regular for the club. He has spent two loan spells away at Anfield, and finally made his 100th appearance for the Reds earlier this season.
Espanyol defender could make loan move
Espanyol’s relegation from La Liga could have repercussions for a number of players, with Premier League clubs ready to take advantage.
One such individual is Leandro Cabrera, with Mundo Deportivo (via the ECHO) reporting there is a clause in the Uruguayan centre-back’s contract which means any club can bring him in on loan without an additional fee if they cover his wages.
Cabrera joined Espanyol in January, having earlier played for Getafe in this season’s Europa League, but was unable to keep the Catalan side in La Liga.
Lovren’s future, meanwhile, remains uncertain. Zenit St Petersburg have reportedly expressed an interest in the Croatian, but Klopp maintains he is “a very important part of the squad.
