Parents must act fast if they want to apply for free school meals.
£120m is going towards providing food in a scheme pushed forward by Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford.
Many only have one week left to sign up for the grant worth £90 as they must register their interest seven days before schools close.
Many break up on July 20, so they’d have to get their applications sorted by next Monday.
So how can you sign up? Daily Star Online put together a handy explainer to make the process as pain-free as possible.
From eligibility to how the vouchers work, here’s all you need to know.
Who is eligible?
The number of children eligible for free meal vouchers is around 1.3 million.
These are provided to most parents who receive the following benefits or contributions:
- Universal Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based employment and support allowance
- Income-based job seekers allowance
- Child tax credit
How do the vouchers work?
The scheme is pretty much an extension of the current system.
Parents are given supermarket vouchers to spend on food over the six week holiday.
Reports suggest parents will get one voucher for the whole break.
This will amount to £15 per child, per week.
In September, the vouchers will come to an end as the government wants all kids back in schools.
So, if you qualify for school meals now, then you are eligible for the voucher.
Summer holiday vouchers are only available in England.
But, the current voucher system has already been extended in Wales and Scotland.
How do you access the scheme?
Schools are expected to support those children eligible for free school meals.
This may be through food parcels for collection.
Or, through the national voucher scheme or alternative vouchers for a local shop.
The electronic gift card or voucher can be spent at supermarkets, which include: Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and M&S.
If you need support accessing free meals during the current crisis head to the government website, here.
Alternatively, speak to your child’s school teacher or head office.
