Jack Grealish has responded to criticism from Graeme Souness, after the Sky Sports pundit stated he is “yet to be convinced” by the Aston Villa skipper.
The midfielder featured in Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, with Souness in the studio providing insight.
“When I was playing I would not want to have been the most fouled player in the Premier League,” Souness said of Grealish before the game. “That means I’m holding onto the ball too long.
“That means I’m not seeing the picture early enough, taking too many touches when I don’t need to.
“There’s no doubt about it he has ability, easy on the eye, silky. But I’m yet to be convinced by him.”
Grealish has undoubtedly been one of the standout performers across the league this season in a struggling Villa side who are facing the threat of relegation.
So far throughout the campaign he has had a hand in over a third of Villa’s goals, scoring seven times and contributing six assists.
Perhaps a more telling statistic with regards to his ability comes in the form of the amount of chances he has created.
He sits behind only Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne – who has been tipped for Player of the Year – and ahead of the likes of James Maddison ( Leicester ) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool).
Reacting to a post on Twitter quoting Souness, along with a table showing the top chance creators in the league, Grealish put simply: “Can’t please everyone.”
The 24-year-old’s form has clearly alerted top sides, with Man Utd continually linked with an approach for him this summer.
Nevertheless, Souness admitted he would still fancy his chances against Villa’s talisman had he come up against him in his prime.
“Would I have liked to have played against him? I’d have loved to have played against him, because he lets me get to him, allows me to get physical with him,” Souness added.
“Do I want to play against Paul Scholes? He’s too quick, Xavi, Iniesta, those types, popping it off one and two touch. I want to play against people like him [Grealish], because I know he’s going to allow me to mess him around.”
