GTA 6 release news – PS5 version could have big advantage over Xbox Series X
GTA 6 fans are eagerly anticipating official information on the next Grand Theft Auto game, which looks all but certain to be destined for the next-gen consoles. Grand Theft Auto fans are currently in the middle of the longest wait ever for a new GTA game, with the fifth entry in the series first launching back in 2013. And it doesn’t look like GTA 6 will be out for a while yet, with an enhanced edition of GTA 5 lined-up next for a PS5 and Xbox Series X release in 2021.
There has been no official word on when GTA 6 will launch and what shape or form it will take when it eventually does release.
But the existence of the GTA 5 enhanced edition suggests at least that GTA 6 will not be getting a release date in 2021.
Rumours have pencilled in GTA 6 as launching in either 2022 or 2023 – and if that’s the case that could all-but rule out a cross-gen release.
Those rumoured launch dates would be considerably into the lifecycle of both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which would surely rule out a PS4 or Xbox One release as well.
As fans wait for the first official announcement on GTA 6 some new details have emerged about what Rockstar Games has lined up for the future.
And it could show that Grand Theft Auto fans on the PS5 will be getting one major feature that their counterparts on the Xbox Series X won’t.
Video Game Deluxe, the studio who released L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, has revealed they are working on a new title with Rockstar Games.
The Australian developers in a post on LinkedIn said they are working on a “AAA open world title in VR for Rockstar”.
Video Game Deluxe posted: “Having finished the critically well received L.A.Noire: The V.R. Case Files we are now gearing up for a new project, a AAA open world title in VR for Rockstar. 2020 marks our 7th year of working exclusively for Rockstar in Sydney and we are excited to taking on this ground breaking project.
“We have a number of job openings in our Sydney studio including Senior Programmers, Engine Programmer, Designer and Animator.”
Could GTA be getting a VR mode for the PS5?
The LinkedIn post doesn’t mention which IP Video Game Deluxe could be working on, but a few possibilities spring to mind.
It could be a VR version of an existing title such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 5.
If it’s the latter it could be part of the GTA 5 enhanced edition. Alternatively, it may be a VR mode for Grand Theft Auto 6.
We’ve already seen fan-made mods launch that allow GTA 5 to be played in VR, but a next-gen VR experience for GTA 6 would be incredible.
The graphics that GTA 6 is expected to boast coupled with the improvements of the rumoured PSVR2 headset could make this feature a huge selling point for the PS5.
Whether Rockstar are planning VR functionality for GTA 6, or for a title like GTA 5, remains to be seen.
But either way – unless anything changes between now and launch – PlayStation fans as well as PC gamers will be the ones that benefit from it.
The Xbox team previously said that they hadn’t seen a demand for VR from their userbase and it’s not something they’re focused on at the moment.
The comments were made by Xbox boss Phil Spencer last November.
At the time Spencer said: “I have some issues with VR — it’s isolating and I think of games as a communal, kind of together experience.
“We’re responding to what our customers are asking for and… nobody’s asking for VR.
“The vast majority of our customers know if they want a VR experience, there’s places to go get those. We see the volumes of those on PC and other places.”
It remains to be seen whether this position changes in the future if virtual reality does gain in popularity.
If it does then Microsoft doesn’t have to go down the Sony route of making their own headset.
The Xbox team may be able to provide support for existing devices such as the Oculus Rift.
