Breakfast is arguably the best part of our morning routines and many of us take extra time at the weekend cooking up the perfect treat.
And when it comes to a tasty, hot breakfast, eggs are usually the star ingredients at the centre of your plate.
Scrambled, fried, boiled or poached, the rich and nutritious food is used in recipes across the world.
Recently, a simple egg recipe has gone viral online and it’s something like a cross between an omelette, eggy bread, and a Croque monsieur.
The no-mess, one-pan egg hack also appears to be a take on the Monte Cristo sandwich – a popular recipe in the US between the 1930s and 1960s.
It has been circulating social media a lot this month, Belfast Live reports.
TikTok user @ivycher uploaded her version of the recipe hack on the video-sharing app with clear instructions to get a mouth-watering fried treat.
Narrating over the video, she says: “Today, I’ll be making the viral egg sandwich.
“For this recipe, I’ll be using two eggs, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper.”
“Pour the mixture in the pan – then you dip it and flip it.”
The woman adds a slice of bread into the beaten egg mixture in the hot pan and continues: “Do the same for the other slice.
“Flip it over when the egg is cooked then I add a slice of cheese and ham.
“Then fold it together and there you have it – enjoy!”
She then folds the cooked egg, cheese and ham filling and the two now fried slices of bread into a neatly stacked sandwich whilst still inside the pan.
The video, which received more than 66,000 “likes” – is one of many Monte Cristo sandwich videos circulating on social media platforms at the moment.
One fan wrote: “I made my sister this for breakfast and she really liked it. Thanks!”
Another quipped: “Brb gonna go make this for breakfast right now!”
Many show basic omelette sandwiches without any filling but some people include ham and cheese, ketchup centres and bacon and spring onion.
The classic Monte Cristo sandwich uses Swiss cheese and ham.
In the comment section under the video, @ivycher wrote that you can add alternative fillings – and recommended tuna or chicken.
