A DIY fan has impressed Facebook homeware fans with his incredible outdoor furniture.
He built the seating and tables for almost nothing from pallets.
The grey and wood outdoor banquette seating cost him just £12 to create – and that was just the cost of the paint.
An incredible bargain when garden furniture can cost into the hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds.
Joe Taylor, 21, who installs data cables for a living, casually posted some snaps of his creation in a popular DIY group.
He said: ”Made this over the weekend out of pallets and some left over 6×2 from the decking, any ideas on what cushions to use? “Been quoted between £150-£200 just for the foam. Any cheaper alternatives?”
DIY enthusiasts were quick to offer their suggestions – and they were blown away by Joe’s handmade furniture.
“Looks fantastic,” wrote one fan.
Another added: “Looks amazing – well done.”
Joe spoke to Daily Star Online, and said: “I got the pallets and cable drums from work and the trim is just left over wood from when I did my decking!
“It didn’t cost anything except the paint which was £12 from Wilko.”
To build the furniture, Joe measured out the pieces he would need to cut and then screwed them into the solid parts of the pallets.
Then he screwed together the ends of the 6×2 when they met at the end.
For the tables he used cable drums as the base.
Joe told us: “I painted some cable drums I got from work and then got about 60 wooden batons out of the scrap wood bin.
“I glued them all together and made a square, traced round the cable drum and cut out the circle with a jig saw then just sanded them a couple of times to get them flat and smooth.
“Then, I put some danish oil on them to make it have a nicer finish and waterproof them…
“It took about four hours to glue them together and I had to let them set over night before taking them out of the clamps.”
If you want to try building your own version, Joe had some sound advice.
He said: “Probably best advice is to double check every measurement and don’t rush any of the cuts.
“Also don’t be shy with the screws because the wood on the outside adds to making the whole thing more solid.
“But, definitely double check or even triple check the measurements, I got all the pieces cut and to size but the pallets moved slightly and it was all out so I had to cut about a centimetre of all of them.”
As for his cushion question, many of the commenters had a clever, and cheap, solution.
They recommended purchasing cot mattresses from Amazon.
You can snap up the perfectly sized cushions for around £19 each.
Then, cover them in a waterproof casing – it’s good if you have a sewing machine as you can run some up using shower curtains.
Joe is thrilled with his new garden set.
He said: “I love how it turned out, I’ve just ordered the cushions for it all and they’re coming in a few weeks hopefully.
“That’s only the second bit of the garden I’ve finished, before lockdown the garden was just grass and it was all over grown with weeds and nettles, I had two weeks off work at the start of lockdown and decided to do something.
“So I’ve turned it all around, but I’m only half way there.
“I got the decking down two weeks ago and then I’ve started to add to it all with the pallet sofa being the first thing on it.”
We’re seriously impressed with Joe’s new furniture.
And, hope he finds the perfect accessories soon.
We’ll bet he can’t wait for the sun to return so he can enjoy his stunning new outdoor area.
