AN 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and killed after a gunman opened fire in a mall that also left three other victims injured.
The shooting took place inside the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Alabama, Friday afternoon killing the 8-year-old, who AL.com has identified as Royta Giles Jr.
The gunfire erupted at 3:18 p.m. on the first floor of the mall. The boy was transported to Children’s Hospital, in Birmingham by a Hoover Fire Department rescue unit.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Hoover Police Chief, Nicholas Derzis confirmed the boy’s death, “I’m extremely saddened to report that an 8-year-old male victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at Children’s Hospital,” he said at a news conference.
“This is certainly a tragic situation when you have an innocent child who gets caught in the middle of an altercation between others.”
The family were on line because of COVID-19 precautions, the store only allows a certain amount of customers in at a time.
The mother said three people had just come out but since there were more of them, they had to wait for one more person to exit.
All of a sudden, shots were fired, “We heard gunshots and I grabbed them and we hit the ground. When we all got up, he was the only who didn’t get up,” she told the outlet.
“To the people who did this, if I could say anything to them, it’s I don’t care about justice or anything like that. I wouldn’t say I’m religious, I would say I’m more spiritual.”
“And the person who did this is going to have to answer for that whether it is to whoever they pray to or if it’s the streets,” she added.
