A timetable to reopen gyms, swimming pools and nail bars in England will be unveiled “next week”, Boris Johnson promised today.
The Prime Minister promised the nation will be given a date after a host of venues – which also include theatres and nightclubs – remained shut.
Pubs, cafes, hotels, campsites and hairdressers are all allowed to open from 6am onwards tomorrow in England.
But a string of venues (full list below) remain shut because they carry a particular risk of spreading the virus.
Government officials say nail bars are a risk because of the amount of face-to-face contact – while gyms involve heavy breathing and shared equipment.
Tanning salons also remain closed, to the outrage of the industry, while theatres can open but without live shows – leading to desperate pleas for a bailout.
Ministers had previously indicated gyms and leisure facilities could reopen from mid-July.
Now Boris Johnson has promised a more solid timetable next week.
He told the Downing Street press conference: “Indoor gyms, nail bars and swimming pools are still closed, mass gatherings are still prohibited, social distancing is still essential.
“I want these restrictions to be lifted as soon as possible – of course I do.
“We have established taskforces to work rapidly and closely with the sectors that remain closed to explore how they can be Covid Secure. I am pleased to report good progress is being made.
“Next week we will set out a timetable for their re-opening.
“Though of course I can only lift those remaining, national restrictions as and when it is safe to do so.”
On the eve of the mass reopening of pubs, Mr Johnson said he would focus on local lockdowns like in Leicester, rather than national lockdowns to deal with outbreaks of virus.
The Prime Minister said: “My view, my urging to everybody, can be summed up in the phrase ‘enjoy summer safely’.
“I do want people to feel that it’s safe to go and enjoy themselves and enjoy hospitality.
“But it’s got to be done in a responsible way.”
People will be asked to give their names behind the bar or in restaurants to track any new outbreaks of the disease.
Venues that are still closed with no timetable to reopen:
- Bowling alleys and skating rinks
- Indoor play areas including soft play
- Nail bars
- Beauty salons
- Swimming pools
- Tattoo and piercing studios
- Water parks
- Indoor fitness and dance studios
- Conference centres, other than for people who already work there.
