COUNTING On’s Jinger Duggar has been criticized for telling fans to “pray away” anxiety and fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
The 26-year-old reality star – who is currently pregnant with her second child – shared her thoughts on the killer virus on Instagram, telling fans: “Our God’s got this”.
Alongside a snap of herself smiling, she wrote: “Ahhhhhh! There’s so much going on around us that can make us worry. Anxiety could be a serious struggle every day if we let it be!
“But believe it or not, the Bible has a lot to say about it. One of my favorite Scriptures is Philippians 4 where we are told to ‘rejoice always’ and ‘never be anxious.’
“The obvious question is, how? And the answer is thankful prayer: ‘In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’
“So beautiful! Our God’s got this.”
Despite her good intentions, fans were quick remind the star that anxiety is a “mental illness”.
One wrote: “Also remember anxiety is a mental illness that affect millions. Kind words don’t cure mental illness. Please don’t downplay people’s suffering. If I could pray my mental illnesses away wouldn’t you think I’ve already tried.”
Another said: “Doesn’t necessarily help if you have an anxiety disorder. If anything you just feel like you’re out of God’s favor if you can’t just happily stop the anxiety by remembering a few comforting passages from the Bible.
“I say this with respect to you both and hope that other sufferers of GAD, PTSD, panic disorder, etc know that they’re not bad, ungodly people if they can’t stop those awful feelings.”
A third added: “Some people have mental illness. And aniexty comes with it. I think aniexty is normal in many circumstances. It’s a God given healthy alert to danger.. depending on tgw circumstance. Sometimes aniexty cant be explained.
“A certain circumstance may make someone anxious .. while another person is just fine. We can address both sides of the coin. Because i was taught growing up that all aniexty is a sin. What a lie.”
It certainly isn’t the first time Jinger has caused a stir in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, the star broke her family’s rules yet again by showing off her legs in a short dress.
She has been one of the Duggar siblings to break away from the family’s conservative ways, especially when it comes to their dress code.
The family chose early on to dress modestly with mom Michelle insisting the girls wore only skirts and dresses after consulting with scripture.
In their 2014 book, Growing Up Duggar, the girls wrote: “We do not dress modestly because we are ashamed of the body God has given us; quite the contrary.
“We realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband.”
Meanwhile, Jinger is expecting her second daughter with husband Jeremy Vuolo.
The expecting mother told PEOPLE: “We are so excited. Felicity is going to have to have a sister.
“Everything looks great with the baby. We’re so thankful. Had a lot of check-ups and we’re just really, really excited.”
Jinger – who is already a mom to daughter Felicity- also revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage last year.
