A DIY fan has renovated her garden into a Mediterranean-style space for a fraction of the price she was quoted.
Having been told the cost would rack up to between £1,400 and £5,000 she decided to transform it herself – with the help of some family.
Sarah DeMille, 42, a customer service worker for her local council, posted some snaps of her gorgeous new garden on Facebook.
The DIY transformation included a shaded pergola, with light curtain draping, tropical plants and a faux-tiled floor.
The blue and white update emulates the gardens of Greece’s Santorini or a Turkish town.
Sarah captioned her post: “Spent the last few days building my pergola. After various extortionate quotes, we decided to get my cousin and dad to build it instead.
Sarah added: “Hard work in the heat, but got it finished before the rain came.
“I really love it and we saved loads by all chipping in with the work – hope you like it too.”
Fellow DIY-enthusiasts clearly did love the space as nearly 500 people liked the post and left hundreds of comments.
Speaking to Daily Star Online, Sarah said: “I did the garden makeover first and enjoyed dining in the fresh air, but found that I kept having to put cushions, blankets, seat pads etc away every time it rained and then get it all back out again.
“I knew lockdown would be impossible if I had to be stuck indoors, so I decided to look up ideas for a pergola or lean to so that we could cover the patio set and stay outdoors longer and even if it was wet.”
The pergola is a white, wooden structure.
A roof is constructed and attached to the house’s wall and then is supported on the opposite side by posts.
Sarah continued: “I looked at designs I liked and contacted several companies for quotes.
“I was advised materials are hard to come by and more expensive now, because of Covid-19, but I was not expecting the sort of prices I was quoted – anything from £1.4k to a staggering £5k excluding vat!
“There was no way I could afford that, being a single mother and only working part time.”
So, the savvy renovator decided to ask around her family for a few hands to pitch in.
Sarah commented: “My cousin had made wooden projects at home and I knew he was pretty good at DIY, so I sent him some design ideas and asked if we could do it cheaper.
“He didn’t hesitate and we roped my father in to help as it’s far too much work for one.”
The 42-year-old gave the pair her ideas and the measurements.
She also did the painting and acted as a labourer while they completed the job.
Sarah said: “It took three days and costs us £500 in materials.
“I then styled it to look Moroccan/ Mediterranean.
“Its based on ones we used to see while on holidays in Turkey.
“I wanted to bring the feeling of holidays to my back garden – even if I do live in wet wales!”
Sarah is currently working from home, and her stunning new garden is the perfect place to relax after a stressful day.
She told us: “The rest of my garden is a similar theme, as is my inside space, so this flows nicely – bringing the inside space out.
“I have been eating outside since having it built and its made a big difference to my happiness.”
DIY fans were blown away by the beautiful makeover.
One person said: “That looks stunning.”
“This looks amazing – I want one,” added another.
A third wrote: “I love it!”
If you want to try something similar, Sarah had some sage advice.
She said:”Wait for a few cooler, but dry, days.
“Plus, its definitely not a job for one – a three person team is the way forward.”
A glass of wine on Sarah’s outdoor sofa sounds like heaven!
