Bruno Fernandes continues to grab the limelight for Manchester United but his midfield colleague Nemanja Matic has been mentioned in the same breath by Alan Shearer.
The Portuguese international has hit the ground running at Old Trafford and helped inspire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
The Red Devils are in the midst of a lengthy unbeaten run and are targeting the top four.
But while Fernandes and Paul Pogba have been lauded for their efforts in attack, Shearer has highlighted the work done by Matic.
He said on Match of the Day: “The plaudits are going to Bruno Fernandes because he was the game-changer but I think someone who definitely deserves a mention is Nemanja Matic.
“The way he sweeps up in front of the defence enables those two [Fernandes and Paul Pogba] to do their stuff further forward.
“He’s the one who gives them protection which enables them to get ahead of the play and do some magic and that’s what they did against Brighton.
“His passing has been fantastic and he’s really stepped up. He constantly wins the ball back and sets Man United on their way.
“He really does his bit defensively and he’s the one who is always there to clean it up. There’s no doubt that he’s stepping up his performances.”
The Serbian looked set for the exit door a few months ago but a string of impressive displays have secured him a new deal.
Matic has played at the base of United’s midfield and provided the foundation that has allowed his team-mates to be so fluid going forward.
Solskjaer’s side have scored six goals without conceding in their past two games and are two points off Chelsea in fourth.
