Lionel Messi made history with a moment of magic in Barcelona’s 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid as he scored his 700th career goal. Messi took his goal in style, scoring a panenka from the penalty spot past Jan Oblak, and Barcelona fans were quick to heap praise on the Argentine – while poking fun at long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona dropped more points in the race for the La Liga title as they threw away two leads against Atletico.
They are now a point behind Real Madrid in the table, but Los Blancos have a game in hand.
Diego Costa’s own goal gave Barcelona the lead after 11 minutes, but Atletico fired back ten minutes later through Saul Niguez’s penalty.
Messi then gave Barca the lead again after 50 minutes, before Niguez scored from the spot again ten minutes after that.
For many fans, however, the game was overshadowed by Messi’s penalty, which was his 700th career goal.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has now reached 700 goals in just 862 games, and fans were quick to note that he achieved the feat in fewer games than Ronaldo, who managed his 700th goal in his 973rd game.
Messi took his goal from the penalty spot, as he ran up and cheekily dinked the ball past Oblak into the back of the net.
And fans were quick to poke fun at Ronaldo after he chipped in his 700th goal, as one fan simply wrote: “Messi>Ronaldo.”
“Don’t know any player who has 700 goals and 320 assists. He is the best ever,” another wrote.
One fan wrote: “Messi just chipped the best keeper in the world with a panenka.”
One joked: “Imagine thinking ronaldo is better than him man.”
Not everyone chose to mock Ronaldo, as one fan praised the greatness of the combined 11-time Ballon d’Or winners.
One wrote: “Both legends but Messi edges it for me.”
